Las Americas Bridge Replacement
- Owner: United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
- Completed: June 2020
- Services: Geotechnical Engineering Structural Engineering, Construction Management
MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional Structural and Geotechnical Engineering services, as well as Construction Management, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Las Americas Expressway Bridge Replacement Project located in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The work consisted of performing a comprehensive geotechnical investigation which additionally required support from Structural Engineering to provide Crane Lifting Plans to allow for the safe pick of the drill rig to specified borehole locations.
One of the locations for this project required a unique solution as it was situated in the middle of an existing channel. This posed numerous design challenges as the existing landscaping imposed limitations on crane maneuvering. The crane would need to ensure the lift capacity and maximum pick radius were not exceeded. MFS collaborated closely with the contractor to ensure all existing site constraints were considered in the design and proper location of the crane.
MFS additionally supported the project by providing Construction Management (CM) services, including on site management for logistics and coordination with multiple stakeholders. This was essential to the success of the project as this expressway is one of the most heavily transited roadways in Puerto Rico.
