NYCDDC Shore Road Rehabilitation

Bronx, NY

Project Overview

MFS Engineers & Surveyors (MFS) provided professional engineering and surveying services for the NYCDDC Pre-Preliminary/Conceptual Design for Shore Road from the Traffic Circle at Orchard Beach Road to the Bronx county line. The existing roadway is located within Pelham Bay Park and serves as the central artery linking all of the major park attractions. Shore Road has been showing signs of wear and tear and suffers from occasional flooding, particularly where it runs adjacent to and partially through historic tidal wetlands. NV5 retained the services of MFS’ Survey, Geotechnical Engineering and Site/Civil engineering teams in support of the project.

Project Details

MFS’ survey team executed a Topographic and Survey and produce a Composite Utility Plan in conjunction with the Project. The complete topographical surveys were referenced by station offsets to the borough monument lines. The topographic survey identified and located all legal dimensions, property boundaries, and physical features within the contract limits.

MFS’ site/civil engineering team prepared a hardware condition inventory of all existing City-owned (includes public authorities) manholes, catch basins/inlets, valve boxes, seepage basins, and all related hardware including frames, adjustment rings, and covers within the project limits. MFS retained a subcontractor to clean all catch basins, inlets, manholes and seepage basins within the project limits where debris interferes with the inspection, and if not feasible, determined the need for cleaning of the structure. A photographic record was made of all City-owned inventory items and included in a hardware inventory report including information about condition of the hardware.

MFS’ geotechnical engineering team conducted a subsurface exploration in support of the project, performing soil borings at approximately 150-foot intervals along the existing roadway alignment in order to investigate the general subsurface conditions at the project site. In addition, MFS completed in-situ permeability testing along the roadway alignment in the vicinity of green infrastructure systems. The MFS team provided special inspections during the subsurface investigation for the project. Upon completion of the field investigation, MFS coordinated with a geotechnical laboratory to carry out testing required in consideration of the proposed roadway reconstruction. MFS prepared a geotechnical engineering report complete with typed boring logs, a discussion and evaluation of the subsurface conditions, and design and construction recommendations for green infrastructure systems, roadway reconstruction, utility support, retaining walls, and other miscellaneous site features proposed as part of the envisioned project.
