PANYNJ - JFK Bergen Electrical Substation

Queens, NY

Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyor, DPC provided professional geotechnical engineering services for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) Bergen Electrical Substation project located in Queens, New York.

Queens, NY

Project Details

The project consisted of constructing a new substation to house 27kV, 5kV, and 480V switchgear, four (4) transformer bays, two (2) battery rooms, and other miscellaneous substation rooms. The total footprint of the substation was approximately 12,000 square feet.

MFS prepared a geotechnical investigation plan to support the envisioned project and subsequently coordinated to carry out a subsurface investigation consisting of three (3) CPT borings and three (3) SPT borings. Each of the borings were conducted to a minimum depth of 100 feet below the existing site grade and shear wave velocity testing was performed during select CPT boring operations to inform a site-specific seismic response analysis for the proposed site development.

Upon completion of the field subsurface investigation, MFS coordinated with a laboratory to have select soil samples tested to aid in our analysis. In addition, MFS prepared a geotechnical engineering report complete with recommendations for proposed shallow mat foundations as well as deep driven pipe pile foundations to support the substation structure. The geotechnical engineering report also included a site-specific seismic analysis and appropriate seismic recommendations for the proposed structure.

Upon receiving approval of the geotechnical engineering report, MFS completed the design of the deep foundations and performed a geotechnical evaluation of the proposed mat slabs on site. In addition, MFS prepared construction documents including drawings and specifications for the deep foundations and other miscellaneous geotechnical components of the planned project.
