Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyors, DPC was contracted by H2M architects + engineers to provide professional geotechnical and structural engineering services for the Town of Greenbush - Third Avenue and Barracks Road Pump Station Upgrade project.

East Greenbush, New York

Project Details

The Third Avenue and Barracks Road Pump Stations were installed in the mid 1970’s and were approaching the end of their useful service life. In addition, there was a need for additional capacity as a result of planned redevelopment and increased existing user needs. The Town of East Greenbush intended to complete upgrades to each of these stations that maximize the existing collection system’s capacity and provide greater safety and efficiency for the maintenance staff.

Two (2) borings were conducted at the Third Avenue Pump Station and two (2) borings were conducted at the Barracks Pump Station. MFS coordinated with our in-house drilling agency, MFS Construction, LLC, to drill the four (4) test borings at the project sites to investigate the general subsurface conditions. Each of the borings were conducted within the footprint of the existing respective pump stations to depth up to approximately 97 feet below grade and no maintenance or protection of traffic was required.

MFS obtained samples continuously in the uppermost 12 feet below grade and at 5-foot intervals thereafter during each of the borings. MFS observed the subsurface conditions and generated test boring logs to include soil classifications in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System, groundwater observations, action of equipment, and other noteworthy observations. MFS provided on-site, full-time oversight by an experienced geotechnical engineer during the subsurface field investigation consisting of four (4) test borings for proper documentation of inspections.

MFS provided structural and foundation designs of the structural components for each station, which included 25’ long by 25’ wide by 20’ deep and 40’ long by 25’ wide by 18’ deep reinforced concrete pump stations supported on pile foundations, reinforced concrete wet wells supported on pile foundations, and ancillary structures such as crane hoists, metal staircases, and handrails. Additionally, MFS provided an excavation plan to protect nearby utilities at the Third Avenue Pump Station and provided design criteria for the pre-engineered superstructures at both locations. MFS worked with the project team to determine locations of pumps, equipment, piping penetrations, and floor elevations.
