Project Details

The construction included the reconstruction of the entrances to the 30th Street Station, including a new headhouse and station reconstruction that will house two (2) new elevators, a stairwell, and escalators to allow for a more open floor plan to enhance the customers’ experience. Additionally, the project included reconstructing a portion of the pedestrian corridor connecting SEPTA’s 30th Street Station to Amtrak’s 30th Street Station. MFS Structural Engineering team provided various Support of Excavation (SOE) designs and construction engineering to facilitate the installation of the underground improvements, including an excavation support pit along Market Street below the existing sidewalk, a soldier pile and timber lagging system, and an internal waler-strut bracing system to support the existing station foundation walls that are to remain.

Additionally, MFS provided the design and construction documents for the underpinning construction sequencing, timber approach pit, and timber shoring to allow for the underpinning pier construction to permanently support the existing SEPTA station foundation walls adjacent to the excavation, due to additional load added from the proposed headhouse structure.

Lastly, MFS provided the structural design of various temporary shoring and bracing systems throughout the project site, including temporary support frames to support existing utility structures throughout the site, temporary shoring at demolition cut lines, structural analysis and verification of the existing structure to remain to support temporary loads imposed from construction loading and cranes, and temporary openings for construction access.

MFS performed all necessary structural design calculations for use in preparing the Final Construction Document set, including construction notes, structural plans, sections, and details as necessary to adequately depict what structural work would be required.
