MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional site/civil and structural engineering services for the Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) Hospital Energy Efficiency Program at Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead, New Jersey. The project consisted of upgrading a cooling plant, as well as upgrading two single-cell indoor centrifugal towers. The new cooling tower required a new outdoor location with new underground piping and new structural supports and foundations.

MFS’s structural engineering team supported the design team by providing the structural design for the new cooling tower supports and foundation utilizing the manufacturer’s base reactions, including lateral loads due to seismic and wind forces. The cooling tower support is comprised of a steel dunnage frame supported on concrete piers and spread footings. MFS provided a schematic design submission, design development documents, and construction documents which included structural drawings, calculations, and technical specifications.

MFS performed a field visit to document the existing site conditions, site constraints, and other site features that may be impacted by the new construction. MFS then developed a schematic design, which included the location of the new building footprint and evaluated other proposed site improvements for suitability and design requirements.

MFS’s site/civil team developed a grading, and drainage plan to properly divert storm water away from buildings and around structures to collect, convey and discharge surface waters in a controlled manner to prevent property damage.

MFS submitted a complete review checklist and permitting package to the Montgomery Township for their review. MFS also developed a final permit set for submission for the Planning Board/Zoning Board review.
