Project Details

MFS’s scope of work included the structural design for several critical components: the south bulkhead modification, basin walkway and program deck, floating kayak launch and gangway, and various site structures surrounding the proposed tidal wetland.

The south bulkhead required significant structural modifications to align with the overall vision for the canal's revitalization. MFS’s structural team developed multiple design concepts, carefully considering the bulkhead’s integration with existing and future projects, such as the ongoing EPA Canal Dredging and the 6th Street Turning Basin bulkhead replacement. The design had to ensure stability, accommodate fluctuating water levels, and withstand environmental stressors while contributing to the aesthetic and functional goals of the public realm.

For the basin walkway and program deck, MFS provided structural designs that balanced functionality with durability. The walkway was engineered to support pedestrian traffic while also serving as a scenic route along the canal. The program deck, designed to host community events and activities, was engineered for resilience, considering both live loads from gatherings and environmental factors like potential flooding. These structures were designed with longevity in mind, utilizing materials and construction techniques that would withstand the test of time in a marine environment.

MFS also provided structural engineering for various site structures, including a lookout platform, outdoor classroom, retaining walls, and other elements surrounding the proposed tidal wetland. These structures were designed to enhance the public’s interaction with the space while being resilient to flood loads and other environmental factors. Our designs had to account for the unique challenges posed by the wetland environment, ensuring that the structures would be both durable and sustainable.
