LIRR Expansion Floral Park to Hicksville

Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyor, DPC (MFS) provided structural engineering services in support of the LIRR Expansion Project Floral Park to Hicksville. The Expansion Project will introduce 9.8 miles of a new third track, close dangerous grade crossings and upgrade stations along this heavily traversed corridor. Additionally, the construction of a third track from Floral Park to Hicksville will reduce train congestion and delays and enable true bi-directional service during peak hours with a more reliable rail network.

Project Details

MFS supported Selco Manufacturing Corp. (Selco) in performing a structural analysis of the new 13’-0” long and 32’-0” tall cantilevered overhead signal bridge structure to replace the existing adjacent signal bridge. The signal bridge is comprised of a box type truss system with a service ladder, maintenance walkway, kick plate, and railings with the supporting structure comprised of a box type truss system with four posts and latticed braces. The design loading incorporated dead loads, live loads, wind loads, and ice loads in accordance with AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Supports for Highway Signs, Luminaries, and Traffic Signals and MTA specifications. Additionally, MFS reviewed and provided NY PE signed and sealed assembly drawings and fabrication drawings of the cantilevered signal bridge structure with supporting calculations that include a 3-D structural model of the signal bridge.
