Medgar Evers College- Caroll Building Renovations ADA Bathroom & Athletic Center

Brooklyn, New York

Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyors, DPC provided professional geotechnical field inspection and structural engineering services for the Medgar Evers College - Carroll Building Renovations ADA Bathroom & Athletic Center project. The project consisted of renovation work within the Carroll Building and newly constructed additions at the College.

Project Details

The interior renovation work involved upgrading to ADA accessible bathrooms and locker rooms, new fitness center and athletic training areas, new offices, new elevator, and lobby entrance areas. The new exterior additions included an elevator lobby for a wheelchair lift and exterior stairway entrance into the building. Support of excavation (SOE) and underpinning designs were required to construct the new elevator shaft adjacent to an existing building foundation wall and to construct the new exterior elevator lobby and exterior stairway entrance at the cellar level.

To support the project, MFS’ geotechnical team conducted two (2) test pits at the project site; one (1) test pit was completed along the west side of the existing retaining wall in the existing sidewalk area and one (1) test pit was completed on the north side of the existing northern areaway foundation. The purpose of the test pits was to determine the extents and conditions of the existing foundations as it relates to the proposed foundation and SOE/underpinning design.

During the test pit investigation, MFS coordinated with our trusted subcontractor to conduct a field investigation consisting of non-destructive testing (NDT) using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in the completed retaining wall test pit and from within the basement level at the existing foundation wall. The results of the NDT provided the MFS structural team with the thickness of the foundation/retaining wall and the size and spacing of the steel reinforcement within the walls.

MFS’ structural team provided the support of excavation and underpinning design to facilitate the excavation within the existing cellar level to construct the new elevator shaft and along the exterior of the building to construct the new elevator lobby and stairway entrance to the cellar level. The support included reviewing all existing subsurface investigations/geotechnical engineering report and proposed/existing plans, determining the foundation gravity loads for the design of the proposed underpinning piers, designing a shoring system to structurally brace the retaining wall during excavation, and analyzing the existing building foundation wall to ensure it is structurally adequate to support the temporary shoring loads.

Additionally, MFS developed and provided a monitoring plan indicating locations of monitoring equipment consisting of seismographs and optical monitoring points. MFS provided construction drawings, typical sections, and notes with supporting calculations, signed and sealed by a New York Professional Engineer.
