NYCEDC Coney Island Green Infrastructure

NYCEDC Coney Island Green Infrastructure
  • Owner: New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC)
  • Completed: December 2021
  • Services: Land Surveying Services Geotechnical Engineering, Site/Civil Engineering

MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional engineering services in support of a Green Infrastructure project in Coney Island, New York. MFS was retained by Dewberry, under contract with NYCEDC, to provide site/civil and geotechnical engineering, as well as land surveying services in support of the project.

MFS’s site/civil engineering services included conducting walkthroughs for locating potential and preliminary ROWBs, SGS, Greenstrips and other GI practices.

MFS's geotechnical engineering team provided full-time engineering oversight during the subsurface investigation at each of the proposed green infrastructure locations. The scope of services at each green infrastructure location included one 20-foot boring and a permeability test at both 5 and 10 feet below grade. During the subsurface investigation, the MFS on-site engineer evaluated the site with respect to the pre-drilling site checklists, logged the boring, and recorded the results of the permeability tests in accordance with the latest revision of the NYCDEP Procedure Governing Limited Geotechnical Investigation for Right-of-Way Green Infrastructure Practices. At the end of each day, the MFS crews provided a daily summary of all work performed as well as provided the daily field book, the predrilling site checklist, typed boring logs, permeability test logs, boring and permeability test location plans, and before and after photographs of each site.

Finally, the survey team performed surveys for the Right-of-Way Green Infrastructure (Bioswales, Rain Gardens, Infiltration Basins, Stormwater Greenstreets) at several hundred locations in conjunction with this project. They additionally performed a topographic survey to gather information on the surface/subsurface features, trees, utilities, and vaults within the defined survey area.
