SUNY Stony Brook 69kV Transformer Replacement

Stony Brook, NY

Project Overview

Stonybrook University is a 1,040-acre main campus located on the north shore of Long Island. The Stony Brook University campus electrical distribution system is served by three redundant feeds. Power supply is fed from either one of the two 69KV, three-phase electric utility feeders supplied by LIPA/PSEG or from the 45 megawatt (MW) co-generation plant owned and operated by Calpine. The current campus structure allows for complete system redundancy where no buildings or areas are without power during an outage, allowing the campus to stay online in case of widespread power outages.

Project Details

Two of the 69 kV transformers (T3 & T4) and the main 13.8 kV switchgear have been in service for over 40 years and have surpassed their normal life expectancies. To study the best option to replace the main switchgear and transformers, MFS was retained by The LiRo Group to provide surveying, site/civil engineering, and structural engineering services. MFS additionally provided a 3D laser scan of the portion of survey limits within fenced areas.

The team reviewed the existing facility records and performed a site visit to assess the best options for replacing the electrical equipment. Crane lifting plans were developed for the proposed electrical equipment plan, showing plan view of the lifting area with all lifting equipment in place and the staging area.
