Project Details

The MFS structural engineering team supported the project by providing the geotechnical loading analysis and structural design for the proposed support of excavation system to retain the existing soil while adhering to strict deflection requirements of the support system due to the close proximity of the adjacent railroad tracks. MFS performed all necessary structural design calculations for use in preparing the Final Construction Document set, including construction notes, support of excavation plans, sections and details as required to adequately depict what structural work would be required.

The unique solutions that MFS brought to the project included utilizing large diameter helical piles with steel road plates to function as lagging boards at the request of the contractor performing the work. The helical piles were proposed to prevent the need of large specialized equipment on site to install approximately twenty (20) soldier piles, hence providing the client substantial cost savings. The helical piles were torqued into the ground and the road plates were installed progressively along with the excavation to allow for the construction of the proposed foundations, retaining walls and access ramps.
