ConEd Rainey Substation Drainage Improvements

ConEd Rainey Substation Drainage Improvements
  • Owner: ConEdison
  • Completed: April 2025
  • Services: Structural Engineering

MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional structural engineering services for drainage improvements at ConEd’s Rainey Substation. The project focused on addressing flooding issues in the Lower Yard by upgrading infrastructure and hardening the site. Structural upgrades included improvements to an existing retaining wall to prevent drainage from the Upper Yard into transformer moat containments, as well as the installation of new pump control panels on concrete pads with protective canopies.

MFS conducted a one-day site visit to visually observe the retaining wall at the Lower Yard and identify areas to eliminate drainage. Prior to the visit, the team reviewed pertinent information, including existing investigations and as-built drawings.

MFS structural team reviewed all available reports and drawings, and provided structural design for the following:

  • Plug detail for existing pipe penetrations
  • Surface crack repair detail
  • Watertight expansion joint detail
  • Reinforced concrete pad and canopy structure for new pump control panels
  • Elevated platform for control panel access

MFS finalized the structural design and delivered all necessary documents for the Final Construction phases. These documents, including supporting calculations, were signed by a New York licensed Professional Engineer. MFS also participated in teleconferences with the design team to review ConEd’s comments and coordinate with other disciplines.
