Project Overview

MFS Consulting Engineers & Surveyors, DPC was contracted by RailWorks Track Services to provide professional structural engineering design and analysis services for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Lechmere Viaduct Rehabilitation project site located adjacent to Charles River Dam Road and bordered by Nashua Street to the east and Edwin H. Land Blvd to the west in Boston, Massachusetts.

Project Details

The project consisted of the Reinstallation Plan for the removal of the existing rail tracks, guardrail, and ties along the Lechmere Viaduct bridge structure. Part of the Reinstallation Plan involved utilizing a barge crane to mobilize and move the John Deere 544 Speedswing Loader machine along the viaduct bridge structure between tracks and as well for removal off the viaduct bridge structure. Special rigging configuration and components were required to safely mobilize and move the loader machine.

MFS’ structural team provided professional structural engineering design and analysis for the Speedswing Loader machine rigging to obtain MBTA approval that consist of providing a Massachusetts PE sign/seal design sketch with supporting calculations for the Speedswing Loader machine rigging, providing review, comments, and markups of the crane lifting plan prepared by others, providing review, comments, and markups of the Reinstallation Plan prepared by Railworks, attend required teleconference meetings with Railworks and/or MBTA to discuss the Speedswing Loader machine rigging, and attend site visits.
