Eversource Prospect Street Bridge Crossing
- Owner: Eversource
- Completed: December 2025
- Services: Structural Engineering
MFS Engineers & Surveyor was contracted by POWER Engineers, Inc. to provide professional structural engineering design and analysis services for the Eversource Energy – Transfer 40MVA from East Cambridge via Prospect Street – Prospect Street Bridge Crossing project in Somerville, MA. The bridge crossing over the Prospect Street Bridge is a MassDOT owned bridge that crosses over an MBTA line on Prospect Street in Somerville, Massachusetts in Middlesex County.
The Prospect Street Bridge is comprised of a pre-stressed voided slab beam superstructure with an asphalt topping supported by reinforced concrete abutments at either side of the bridge span. MFS’ scope of work was comprised of supporting the installation of a utility support system to accommodate the twelve new electrical 5” diameter fiberglass conduits along the southbound side of the bridge.
MFS’s structural team provided the structural analysis and design of the utility crossing bridge attachment directly fixed at both ends of the bridge abutment walls. Due to existing site constraints and potential design issues, it was determined by the project team that the proposed utility crossing would not be attached to the exterior voided slab beams or sidewalk slab as initially anticipated due to existing site constraints and potential design issues. The proposed utility support system will be located adjacent to existing utility brackets for a separately installed utility crossing. Galvanized steel wide flange beams will support the length of the utility crossing and will be fastened to the utility bracket at the bridge abutment walls.
MFS provided Final Construction Documents including calculations and detailed drawings signed and sealed by a Massachusetts Professional Engineer.
