MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional structural engineering services for the HVAC System Upgrade at Harlem Stage Gatehouse. The project involved upgrading the existing HVAC system in a two-story masonry building constructed in 1890, which had one air handler regulating the entire building, resulting in temperature control challenges.
MFS’s structural team conducted a one-day on-site inspection with two structural engineers. The team visually assessed the building’s structural condition and documented any deficiencies, reviewing existing investigations and historical drawings prior to the visit.
The HVAC system upgrade was based on a DDC “Design Track 2” standard. MFS provided supported the design team by providing the structural design with the following items:
- Design new concrete pads for boiler and mechanical units at the cellar level.
- Analysis of existing upper tower steel dunnage and theater rigging framing to ensure they could support new equipment loads.
- Design of new equipment brackets, utility supports, and hangers.
MFS prepared and sealed the necessary NYC Department of Buildings (NYCDOB) TR forms and assisted in the filing process through DOBNOW.
During construction, MFS provided technical support by reviewing structural submittals, responding to RFIs, preparing clarification sketches, and conducting site visits. The team participated in teleconferences with contractors and provided construction administration services to ensure alignment with contract drawings.
