MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional survey services in support of the New York City Economic Development Corp. (NYCEDC) West 33rd Street Viaduct project in Hudson Yards located in New York, NY. The well-known Hudson Yard’s project has opened the adjacent rail tracks to building developments. As part of this project, several new buildings are to be constructed abutting West 33rd Street. The street is a partial viaduct that needs to be replaced and regraded to accommodate the new buildings. MFS’ services were retained by NV5 to perform a survey supporting the design.

The survey included West 33rd Street between 11th Avenue and 12th Avenue, extending 50 feet into the side streets, north of the viaduct’s fascia retaining wall and southerly to the edge of existing railroad tracks. The project required a considerable amount of coordination with neighboring projects and existing site conditions, as well as adjacent stakeholders such as NYCDOT and Amtrak.

The survey was accomplished utilizing a combination of total station and laser scanners as appropriate, taking into consideration safety of MFS field surveyors, and access to certain areas within the limits of survey. The scope also included a survey of the area beneath the viaduct (railroad ROW/tracks, private property, and city ROW), abutments, piers, bottom elevations and general locations of superstructure including girders/beams/cross members, etc., along with a general topographic survey of the ground surface including tracks. This area of the survey was performed with a laser scanner to allow for maximum possible coverage and efficient time use.
