Seton Hall University Energy Upgrades
- Owner: Seton Hall University
- Services: Structural Engineering
MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional structural engineering services for the HVAC Upgrade project at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. The project encompassed two buildings located south of County Route 510 between Valley Street and Seton Drive, including Aquinas Hall and Boland Hall. Services were performed in support of Goldman Copeland Consulting Engineers and were based on review of project documentation and coordination correspondence supplied by the client.
The project scope included mechanical system upgrades across the four facilities requiring structural analysis and design to accommodate new equipment loads and associated building modifications. Aquinas Hall and Boland Hall are low-rise campus buildings situated between Ward Place and Seton Drive where rooftop chiller replacements and equipment additions were planned. The overall project objective was to support comprehensive HVAC modernization while coordinating incidental electrical, plumbing, and interior work associated with the mechanical upgrades.
MFS conducted a structural site survey consisting of a full-day visit by two structural engineers who attended a kickoff meeting, reviewed available historical documentation, and visually documented existing structural conditions across all buildings, with services limited to observational assessment of accessible components. MFS subsequently developed structural analysis and design through the 90% construction document phase, including design of equipment dunnage, pads, and rooftop support systems for new and replacement chillers at Aquinas and Boland Halls, louver and piping penetrations, and primary support steel for refrigerant piping.
MFS also prepared coordinated structural drawings, specification input, and participation in multidisciplinary coordination meetings, followed by finalization of sealed structural drawings and calculations for the 100% construction document submission. During construction, MFS provided administration services including review of structural submittals and shop drawings, responses to contractor requests for information, preparation of clarification sketches, participation in coordination meetings, and a site visit to observe general conformance with contract documents and support field coordination, facilitating successful implementation of the HVAC upgrades across all two buildings.
